Petwise Communities

Petwise Communities is a proactive education and outreach project developed by RSPCA Hull & East Riding to promote responsible dog and cat ownership, prevent neglect, and support long-term companionship. It delivers fun, accessible workshops in both schools and community venues, engaging a wide range of audiences including children, families, and those experiencing social isolation. At the heart of Petwise is the belief that early education leads to better outcomes for both pets and people. The project introduces participants to the Five Animal Welfare Needs—covering health, behaviour, environment, companionship, and nutrition—through interactive, age-appropriate learning. Activities include quizzes, videos, creative poster-making, storytelling, and discussions tailored to different age groups and learning abilities. School sessions align with the national curriculum in Science, Personal Social Health Education (PSHE), Geography, and Citizenship, enhancing pupils’ learning while embedding core values such as empathy and responsibility. Community workshops provide much-needed social connection and practical pet care knowledge to families who may face barriers to information or support. Petwise also builds bridges between people and services. It raises awareness of local support, such as the RSPCA’s animal food bank, low-cost neutering, and rehoming services—offering practical help to pet owners in need. Petwise will reach over 500+ children and 100+ families through 50 school sessions and 10 community workshops. Led by an experienced Education Officer and supported by volunteers, it is a scalable, cost-effective initiative that prevents future cruelty, neglect, and abandonment—ensuring dogs and cats remain lifelong companions in loving homes.

The project will reach 500+ children & 100+ families through 50 school sessions and 10 workshops. Results include increased knowledge of dog and cat care, better understanding of the Five Welfare Needs, reduced social isolation, and stronger school and community engagement. Participants will be more confident and capable of providing lifelong, loving homes for their pets, and becoming long-term charity champions–donating time as volunteers, fundraising and advocating for a kinder world for pets.
