Corporate
Almo Nature

Specialising in dog and cat food, Almo Nature was founded in 2000 thanks to the intuition and experience of Pier Giovanni Capellino, a long-time entrepreneur in the field. Almo Nature’s philosophy revolves around the quality and origin of the ingredients used for its dog and cat food, in order to formulate recipes according to their point of view, which has been the official positioning statement for years.

Almo Nature was the first company in the world to introduce a wet pet food line that entirely consists out of ingredients fit for human consumption (HFC). The company created a dry food line directly afterwards, introducing the world’s first HFC kibble for dogs and cats under the name aLternative.

More recently, Almo Nature revolutionised the cat litter market with the launch of its innovative CatLitter. Out of completely natural origin and without any chemical components kind, this litter is distinguished by its safety and remarkable performance: a bag of 2,27 kg guarantees up to 4 weeks of hygiene (for an average cat of 4 kg).

From the start, Almo Nature has consistently set new standards with ever-innovative product lines, as well as a growing commitment to solidarity projects for cats, dogs and wildlife. This commitment led Almo Nature to adopt a new signature: pet food + aLmore

Almo Nature has grown into a “pocket multinational” with its headquarters in Genoa and smaller offices in Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States of America, and has become a benchmark and knowledge center for innovation in the industry.

Spurred on by love and respect for nature and our companion animals, Almo Nature’s founder, Pier Giovanni Capellino decided to use all company profits (dividends), from January 2018 onwards, to invest in solidarity projects for dogs, cats and biodiversity. It is the start of a new foundation, called Fondazione Capellino (Capellino Foundation) and the start of a new positioning statement for the Almo Nature brand: owned by the animals.

The foundation has an innovative socio-economic model: a non-profit foundation (Fondazione Capellino) with the sole objective of defending dogs and cats and preserving biodiversity, merged together with a company (labour + financial capital + branded products), whose profits (dividends) allow it to pursue an aim of general interest.

This way, the animals, as well as the customers are the ultimate beneficiaries of Almo Nature.

“… and we are not stopping there, as we will continue to create innovative dog and cat foods, formulated with high quality ingredients, for the well-being of our companion animals.”

Pier Giovanni Capellino
Founder Almo Nature

“… from 1 January 2018 until forever, all incoming net profits (dividends) from Almo Nature product sales, will be donated to projects that will benefit dogs, cats and contribute to the protection of biodiversity.“

“… As soon as the specific Italian normative framework (currently being reformed) will permit it, we will juridically perfect this solemn and public promise by officially donating the private shares of Almo Nature to the Capellino Foundation. The profits accrued from 1 January 2018, onwards are at the disposal of the Capellino Foundation, and have been put aside while we await the definitive bill on foundations, due between the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019.”

A new and different business model has emerged, of which the primary beneficiary is not an individual, a family, a multinational company or an investment fund — it is nature — through projects carried out by the Capellino Foundation!

So, when you choose to buy Almo Nature (or recommend it to others), instead of another cat or dog food brand on the market, you are buying the best product for your companion animal, you’re contributing to the defence of biodiversity and you’re promoting a new economical model: Solidarity Capitalism

The Projects
Almo Nature and Fondazione Capellino are now a dual entity

From 2019 onwards, Almo Nature will become a benefit corporation, meaning that it includes positive impact on the environment, in addition to profit, as its legally defined goals. Benefit corporations differ from traditional companies in purpose, accountability and transparency, but not in taxation. This enables Almo Nature to include the goals of public interest and align itself to the Capellino Foundation.

Almo Nature will run all projects involving dogs and cats (A Companion Animal Is For Life, Dog Blood Donors) and all other marketing campaigns. The Foundation will be responsible of running the projects related to safeguarding biological diversity (Farmers&Predators, Villa Fortuna Permaculture, and starting in 2020, the great primates protection project).

"At the end of the startup phase, in January 2019, Almo Nature will officially present to the Press and the community the second step of the EU project, A Companion Animal Is For Life. The project, through three complementary actions, aims at stopping abandonment and the issues surrounding stray cats and dogs, and is determined to help shelters speed up their adoption processes and transform catteries and kennels into places of temporary refuge.

In July 2019, once the Foundation (which will officially own Almo Nature) receives its first share from the fiscal year 2018, it will launch the second step of the project, Farmers&Predators. The aim of the project is to safeguard areas that are vital for the survival of the great mammals (both carnivore and non-carnivore) and to foster coexistence between them and humans, as each vie to occupy the same territory.

"Rigenerando Villa Fortuna" is an experimental agricultural project with the purpose of regenerating the soil of farmland that was subjected to decades of intensive cultivation. We aim to work on the farmland surrounding the current building where, at the end of the regeneration process, the Capellino Foundation headquarters will be settled, in the municipality of San Salvatore Monferrato Italy.

Where did Almo Nature adventure begin?

To convince wolves to become dogs, I imagined that humans had to promise something; we wanted to get to the bottom of just what that promise could have been.

It all started living together with my cats Shabbat and Chocolat, and dogs Shang, “Dottor Salento” and Yanga.

The fact that I can look at things “from their point of view” is thanks to them — which may seem obvious, but it’s not.

Especially Dottor Salento, who is always by my side, work and otherwise…he is the one who first inspired our philosophy, and then the products, with his attitude and gestures. He was the mind… I just gave his ideas a voice.”

Before obtaining the prefecture’s recognition, the statute underwent several modifications, including a very substantial one that will open the foundation’s assembly meeting (the assembly of the objectives) to the people.

The foundation has one single goal, that is to safeguard biological diversity and to protect dogs and cats.

From 1 January 2018, and onwards, the profits (dividends) accrued by selling Almo Nature products will be at the disposal of the Capellino Foundation, meaning that they’re at the at the disposal of animals and biodiversity.

The solidarity projects will be further developed using the accrued profits (dividends) from 1 January onwards, once all assets that belong to Almo Nature have been transferred to the foundation. However, the formal handover is currently awaiting execution due to legislative processes in Italy. To continue, the Italian government has to approve the reform of the service industry (for non-profit associations), which does not include specific regulations for foundations, but this is currently hampered by the ineffectiveness of the government and the parliament.
