Companion Animal For Life, a European project of Fondazione Capellino supported by Almo Nature, aims at securing a new status, which would mean they’d be recognised as full family members by the court of law.
To this end, the project takes action to:
promote awareness of the proposed new status and then draft and submit a European Citizens’ Initiative* asking the European Commission to propose legislation around the initiative (#RespectMe);
develop a European registry to manage the registration of dogs and cats to families, which will facilitate easy reunions in case of loss and help deter abandonment by enabling the quick idenitification of individuals who abandone animals so that they can be prosecuted by law authorities. (#I&R);
promote awareness of the following among future adopters (#AdoptMe):
- the idea that adoption is a lifelong commitment (except for in very few cases strictly regulated by law) that requires serious and deep consideration by potential adopters,
- the benefits and significance of choosing to adopt a dog or cat from a shelter when seeking a new animal companion;
provide support for families in economic difficulty to help prevent the abandonement of companion due to hardship (#RespectMe).
* The European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) is an important tool of participatory democracy within the EU, which allows one million citizens residing in a quarter of the Member States to submit a request to the European Commission to propose legislation aiming to implement EU treaties.

In 2019, the activity allowed 24,557 cats and dogs to receive 736,716 solidarity meals in Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, and Holland. The Identification & Registration of dogs and cats program (I&R) financially supported the I&R international conference that took place in Berlin on November 6, 2019, with the aim of taking stock of the present European legislation and reviving the path to a unique model of identification of dogs and cats, valid for all EU countries. For 2020, the objective is to continue with the 2019 activities, further reinforcing the action of Fondazione Capellino among its stakeholders.
A highly innovative I&R project is under development, which will be launched in Europe in the first semester of 2021. The decision has been taken to use the RespectMe program to support the cats and dogs living in families facing economic difficulties, in order to prevent their abandonment for necessity.
With regard to the AdoptME program, the decision has been taken to increase the efforts, promoting an awareness campaign among the European population, in cooperation with the Almo Nature foods for dogs and cats.
The project’s 2020 budget amounts to Euro 1,827,050.
The reports will be available from the beginning of July 2021
