How to Read Cat and Dog Food Labels

Whether you’re deciding on food for your first cat or dog companion (congratulations!) or are simply looking to change brands, choosing the most suitable food can feel like a daunting task.

A pet food label can seem confusing, with lots of information and unfamiliar terms, but it doesn’t have to be! Here, we will define and summarize the most important things to look for on a label:

Type of food: this indicates whether a food is complete and balanced (containing ingredients in addition to animal proteins, such as rice, vegetables, vitamins, minerals) or complementary (containing a limited amount of ingredients without any additives).

Ingredients: The ingredients contained in the recipe are listed in descending order, from the highest quantity to the lowest. The ingredients can be presented as singular items or in grouped categories.

Guaranteed analysis: This is information on the product’s nutrient content (similar to nutrition labels on human foods). It provides a guarantee of the minimum percentages of crude protein and crude fat, and the maximum percentages of crude fiber, moisture and ash.

Almo Nature offers both complete and balanced (nutritionally balanced) and complementary foods. We advise to rotate between complete and balanced, and complementary foods to ensure a balanced diet.

Our labels are concise, which shows how natural our products are. All our recipes are made without any chemicals and only use fresh, high-quality basic ingredients.

When you go out and buy food for your companion, don’t just choose the can with eye-catching colors… always choose those with a short label, and read it carefully! It’s important to choose the right food for our companion.
